There is an emerging understanding in psychology and social science that the arts have healing properties. Listening to music can soothe. Looking at a painting can energize. That is good. But creating music, painting, photography, dance, or any other art form is known to have healing powers, whether it is therapeutic or self-actualizing.
Front Street is the center of artist activity in Dayon. The building dates back nearly to the Civil War when all of the envelopes used by the federal government were printed there. It is in Downtown Dayton and serves as a studio and gallery space for more than 150 artists and artisans, including painters, woodworkers, sculptors, textile artists, glass artists, and more. It’s one of the coolest and most authentic art experiences you can find anywhere.
A commercial gallery featuring exhibits and sale of fine arts pieces from around the world. The gallery features a diverse collection that includes contemporary, modern, experimental, and temporary styles. A list of current artists on display and photos of their work can be found on the gallery’s website.
K12 Gallery & Teen Education and Joint Adult Studio (TEJAS) is one of the most unique art galleries in Dayton, Ohio. It’s a visual arts center that offers programs for experienced and aspiring artists of any age, including classes, camps, trips, and workshops. Features rotating exhibitions at their gallery
location and has also supported the creation of more than a dozen public art murals on buildings throughout Dayton metro.
Rosewood Arts Centre is dedicated to enriching the quality of life for the residents of Kettering and the greater Dayton area by providing creative experiences through the arts. Rosewood presents over 400 classes annually for youth and adults, as well as contemporary art gallery exhibitions, theatre performances, artist studios, and special events, including the annual fine arts festival Art on the Commons.
Downtown Dayton has a unique collection of galleries and museums focusing on such varied subjects as art, cars, peace, and funk. A new, state-of-the-art library and a popular independent, “art-house” movie theater are just some of the many cultural venues unique to downtown.
The Dayton Art Institute is the largest and longest-standing art gallery in Dayton, Ohio. It’s really a museum with many galleries within it, encompassing 5,000 years of art history and including 27,000 objects from Ancient American, European, Asain, and African collections. The Dayton Art Institute hosts socials, classes, youth programs,
and signature fundraisers throughout the year as well as private events.
Dutoit is part of the Front Street campus, but it’s also known as one of the best individual art galleries in Dayton. There is a new exhibition every month but also features work from more than twenty artists at any given time.
The galleries at Wright State University serve as an educational art resource not only for Wright State students but the entire Dayton community at large. The gallery exhibits contemporary art from many mediums and hosts workshops, speaker events, and educational programs throughout the year. The space itself is open and expansive,
featuring six galleries in total.
The Contemporary Dayton was founded in 1991 by a group of Dayton artists who saw a need for more community engagement around visual art in the community and interaction between artists in the area. Since then it has been a leader in contemporary art exhibitions, featuring 12 to 18 each year.
Originally founded as the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors in 1938 by artists in association with the Dayton Art Institute where meetings and exhibits took place for many years. The opportunity to have a gallery of their own came during the Dayton urban renewal project of the 1960s when the members bought the Victorian style house at 48 High Street.
